Glucuronide residues are essential for the anticoagulant effect of mushroom polysaccharides because their activity disappears after the reduction of their carboxyl groups. In an in vitro test using oral polysaccharides in rats, we observed an inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation, as observed with aspirin, a well-known antiplatelet drug. Polysaccharides from these mushrooms may constitute a new source of compounds with effects on coagulation, platelet aggregation and possibly on thrombosis.
